Wounded Sheep Support Group

Wounded Sheep Support Group Have you experienced Church Hurt? Spiritual or Religious Abuse? Has your Faith been Broken or Wounded? This Group is for You!

The Wounded Sheep Support Group is a support group that meets in east Dallas at St. Matthew's Cathedral and provides a safe, nonjudgmental environment for individuals impacted by religious or spiritual abuse. Many people who became involved in abusive groups were seekers who had a genuine interest in spirituality and a desire to learn more about God and Christianity. Sadly, the group's leadership was over-controlling, manipulative, and unhealthy. Because of their initial desire to pursue a spiritual path, recovery includes examining and releasing the toxic beliefs of their abusive group and the distorted picture of God that was taught in their group. This group will provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment for you to rethink your beliefs and explore a healthy image of God. The group meets on the second Sunday of the month at 1:30 pm. Contact Wendy Duncan at 214-607-1065 (landline) or email at wendyjduncan19@gmail.com. There is no charge for the group. Individuals who wish to be a part of the Wounded Sheep support group will need to understand that the group will not be a forum to debate the existence of God. Those who are antagonistic or hostile toward Christianity will not be appropriate for this group. The goals of this support group are:• Working through feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, grief, and confusion.• Understanding the extent of the spiritual abuse that you have been through.• Learning about religious trauma and how to deal with triggers.• Reclaiming your right to think and feel for yourself and learning to trust yourself.• Learning skills for self-love and self-care.• Examining irrational fears and ideas from your abusive group that impact your healing.
There is no commitment or fee associated with any of the groups. The only requirement is that participants agree to abide by confidentiality standards and to engage respectfully with the other members. For additional information please email wendyjduncan19@gmail.com. Facilitators: Doug and Wendy Duncan are former members of a Bible-based pseudo-Christian group and were able to reconnect with God through the Episcopal Church (described in I Can’t Hear God Anymore). After leaving the group where he was a member for over twenty years, Doug earned his master’s degree in counseling and is now a licensed professional counselor in the state of Texas. Wendy is a licensed social worker with a master’s degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She is also the author of I Can’t Hear God Anymore: Life in a Dallas Cult, the true story of the couple’s involvement in and eventual separation from the religious group. Since renouncing their membership in the cult, Doug and Wendy have developed a passion for educating the public on the problem of spiritually abusive groups and teaching churches how to minister to wounded believers. Doug and Wendy Duncan have spoken at numerous conferences and are active members of the International Cultic Studies Association. Doug is a contributing author for their magazine.
