Religious/Spiritual Abuse
No religion or spiritual organization is immune to the devastating effects of spiritual abuse. It is easy to see that someone coming out of a religious cult has experienced spiritual abuse, but it can happen anywhere––a Baptist church, a Catholic church, an evangelical "megachurches," tiny country churches, convents, temples, synagogues, and small community or home Bible studies. Whenever a leader uses their authority and uses spiritual-based threats to keep people in a place or wield power over vulnerable members of a group, then spiritual abuse is present. Spiritual abuse differs from other types of abuse because there is a religious component, such as misuse or misinterpretation of scripture, a distortion of the character of God, or a foreshadowing of eternal damnation. Spiritual abuse is about control and coercion that is used to force conformity and submission to the leader’s demands.
